Description |
An International Standard (IS) provides rules, guidelines or characteristics for activities or for their results, aimed at the achievement of the optimum degree of order in a given context. International Standards can take many forms. |

Apart from product standards, there are test methods, codes of practice and, increasingly, management standards. |

The focus is on performance-based rather than prescriptive standards. |
Lifecycle / Review period |
They are designed for common and repeated use, and do not have a pre-defined lifetime. They are, however, subject to review regarding their continuing utility, on a maximum five year cycle. |
