  • ISO International Organization for Standardization.
    Founded in 1947. Non-treaty international organization based in Geneve, Switzerland. ISO members may be non-governmental organizations or governmental agencies

  • IEC International Electrotechnical Commission.
    Founded in 1906. Non-treaty international organization based in Geneve, Switzerland. IEC members may be non-governmental organizations or governmental agencies

  • ITU International Telecommunication Union .
    Founded in 1865. Treaty-based international organization, an ONU Agency, based in Geneve, Switzerland. Only governments are the primary members.

ISO - International Organization for Standardization.

Description

An International Standard (IS) provides rules, guidelines or characteristics for activities or for their results, aimed at the achievement of the optimum degree of order in a given context. International Standards can take many forms.

Sort of standards

Apart from product standards, there are test methods, codes of practice and, increasingly, management standards.

Focus

The focus is on performance-based rather than prescriptive standards.

Lifecycle / Review period

They are designed for common and repeated use, and do not have a pre-defined lifetime.

They are, however, subject to review regarding their continuing utility, on a maximum five year cycle.
