Term Description
EA The European co-operation for Accreditation
EC The European Commission is independent of national governments. Its job is to represent and uphold the interests of the EU as a whole, being responsible for implementing the decisions of Parliament and the Council.
EC declaration of conformity The manufacturer or the authorised representative established within the Community must draw up an EC declaration of conformity as part of the conformity assessment procedure provided for in the New Approach directives.
EC Treaty Treaty establishing the European Community.
ECB European Central Bank.
Economic Operators The manufacturer, the authorised representative, the importer and the distributor.
Editing Committee Support to Technical Committee (TC) Secretary for editorial and language validation of text.
EEA European Economic Area – consists of the European Union and all the EFTA countries except Switzerland.
EEC European Economic Community – one of three European Communities set up in 1957 to bring about economic integration in Europe.
EFTA The European Free Trade Association is an intergovernmental organisation set up for the promotion of free trade and economic integration to the benefit of its four Member States: Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.

Enquiry Stage At the enquiry stage, the enquiry draft (DIS in ISO, CDV in IEC) shall be circulated by the office of the CEO within 4 weeks to all national bodies for a 5 months vote.
Entity Any concrete or abstract thing that exists, did exist, or might exist, including associations among these things.
EP The European Parliament has three main roles: 1) Passing European laws – jointly with the Council in many policy areas. 2)Parliament exercises democratic supervision over the other EU institutions, and in particular the Commission. 3) Parliament shares with the Council authority over the EU budget and can therefore influence EU spending.

Essential Requirements A fundamental principle of the New Approach is to limit legislative harmonisation to the essential requirements that are of public interest. These requirements deal in particular with the protection of health and safety of users and sometimes cover other fundamental requirements.
