Term Description
NANDO New Approach Notified and Designated Organisations Database.
National Deviation Modification of, addition to or deletion from the content of an EN (and HD for CENELEC), made in a national standard within the same scope as the EN (and HD for CENELEC).
National Member A national standards body within the EC or EFTA, or from a country likely to become a member of the EC or EFTA which has committed itself to complying with the rules set by the statutes of the association and whose written application for membership has been approved by the CEN General Assembly.
National Standard Standard at is adopted by an NSO and made available to the public.
National Standardization Standardisation that takes place at the level of one specific country.

New Work Item Proposal (NP) Before any technical work may start on developing an International Standard, an NP for the work must be approved by JTC1 and the work allocated to the appropriate Sub-Committee. In order for the NP to be approved it must be supported by a majority of P-members, with at least five P-members of the relevant Sub-Committee committing themselves to active participation in the associated work.
NGO Non Governmental Organisations
Non-disclosure Agreement Agreement developed in a consortium to share knowledge in order to develop a common standard and/or technology and keep this knowledge confidential until the moment they agree to publish the standard and/or to introduce the technology in the market.
Non-public Standard Standard accessible only to the parties involved in drafting it.
Norm A Standard, a pattern or a model considered typical for a specific group.
NORMAPME European Office of Crafts, Trades and Small and Medium sized Enterprises for Standardisation.
Normative Document Document that provides rules, guidelines or characteristics for activities or their results.
Notification Act whereby a Member State informs the Commission and the other Member States that a body, which fulfils the relevant requirements, has been designated to carry out conformity assessment according to a directive.
Notified Bodies Semi-official or private technical orgnisation appointed by Member States, either for approval and monitoring of the manufacturers' quality assurance system or for direct product inspection.
