T. Egyedi and K. Blind. "The Dynamic of Standards". Edward Elgar Publishing. 2008

Definition

"Covers the changes to and interactions between standards, that is, what happens to standards once they have been set. It includes the changes which standards undergo, competition between standards, and the interaction and friccion between complementary standards. It takes standards development into account as a source of dynamics in existing standards".

Categories
  1. Implementation Change

The implementation deviates from the standard when:

    • the standard specification may only partly be implemented in order to suit the local situation
    • the standard specification is extended and implemented in a way that ties customers to a producing company

  2. Standard Maintenance

Includes the developing of a new standard edition, a corrigendum, an amendment or a revision; merging and spliting standards: getting a standard accepted by another standards body; and withdrawing and reinstating a standard.

  3. Standard Succession

Refers to the replacement and substitution of one standard by another in an area of standardization, and includes what may be recognized in retrospect as the next generation of the standard.
